Michael D. Paul graduated cum laude from St. Mary's School of Law (May 2005), where he served as the Solicitations Editor for Volume 36 of the St. Mary's Law Journal. Although he never intended to practice law after graduation, he was hired as an associate by Gunn, Lee & Cave in January of 2006, and hasn't looked back since.
In addition to trademarks, patents, and copyrights, Michael's practice includes general business transactions and litigation, as well as federal appellate practice. His domestic and international patent prosecution experience includes general mechanical and electrical inventions, applications for durable medical equipment, software applications, and applications for downhole tools for completion and production of petroleum-producing wells.
In addition to the federal and state courts of Texas, Michael has represented clients before the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fifth and Federal Circuits, the United States District Court for the Central District of California, and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He is a member of the Federal Bar Association and the Texas Aggie Bar Association.
Prior to attending law school, Michael worked for a San Antonio-based telecommunications company. Starting as an embedded systems engineer writing assembly code, his other positions included webmaster, network administrator, systems engineer, programmer, and Chief Operating Officer. His job responsibilities included regular travel in Central America, where he learned just enough Spanish to stay out of trouble.
Michael graduated cum laude from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (May 1995), concentrating in digital signal processing. He also holds a Masters of Business Administration from Texas A&M (December 1996) with a focus in management information systems.
Michael and his wife, Angie, have one son, AJ, a rather large dog, and two cats. If he isn't in the office, he is either (a) spending time with family; (b) attending an Aggie sporting event; (c) skiing; (d) SCUBA diving; (e) at the gym; or (f) reading a book on the failures of Keynesian economics. He is an experienced jazz trombonist, although there is plenty of room for improvement.
